S. L. Bhyrappa was a Kannada novelist and a retired professor of philosophy, and one of the most widely read writers in India. He received the Padma Shri in 2016 [1] and was named for the Padma Bhushan in 2023 in the field of literature and education, from Karnataka [2].

From hardship to philosophy

Bhyrappa was born on 20 August 1931 into a very poor family in Santheshivara village, in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district [3]. Plague took his mother, an elder sister and an elder brother, and his younger brother died for want of medical care [3]. He worked at many jobs to pay for his schooling, and these early encounters with death led him to study philosophy [3].

He taught philosophy at a college in Hubballi and at Sardar Patel University in Gujarat, earned a PhD on “Truth and Beauty” from Baroda University, and worked with NCERT in New Delhi from 1967 to 1971 before retiring from its Regional College of Education in Mysuru [3]. He was also a National Professor for five years [3].

Twenty-five novels

He began writing novels in 1962 and published 25 of them, along with four works of criticism [3]. Much of his fiction explored the cultural unity he found in his travels through Indian villages and his reading of the country’s history, music, dance and temples [3]. His novels were translated into most Indian languages and English, and seven into Sanskrit [3]. Avarana went through 65 printings in Kannada, and several novels, including Vamshavruksha, Godhuli and Grihabhanga, were made into award-winning films [3].

He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Daatu, the Saraswati Samman for Mandra, and the Sahitya Akademi’s fellowship, its highest honour; according to his citation, the Akademi recognised his novel Parva as the best Indian novel of the 20th century [3].

Bhyrappa died in Bengaluru on 24 September 2025, aged 94 [4].
